Faculty and Staff:


Saint Mary Academy has 28 full time teachers. There is a school leadership team that consists of the principal, assistant principal, curriculum director, guidance counselor and learning coordinator. There are 16 full time instructional assistants who support classroom teachers and focus on assisting students to be successful. The teaching staff is also supported by a Technology Coach, Director of Technology and academic tutor. Each teacher is assigned extra-curricular activities in an effort to provide more opportunities for our students.

    Bio
    Julie Speer has been a part of St. Mary Academy since the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. She is originally from Michigan where much of her extended family resides, but grew up in Louisville where she attended St. Albert the Great School and Assumption High School. Julie received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky in 2010. Julie began her career in education in 2012 as a 5th grade teacher at St. Athanasius School. In 2013, Julie completed her Master’s Degree in Education with a Literacy Endorsement from Bellarmine University. Julie taught 5th grade for three years before transitioning into teaching 4th grade at St. Athanasius, where she continued to teach for another three years. During her sixth year of teaching, she began her Educational Specialist Degree in School Leadership and Administration at Bellarmine University, graduating with this degree and her Rank 1 in 2017.
    Julie enjoys reading, exercise, cooking, UL sports, art and anything that allows her to be creative, spending time with family and friends, and seeking ways to continue to grow professionally in order to provide the best education for the students of St. Mary Academy.

    Fun fact: Julie began working at the age of 15 at a retirement home serving residents in the dining room, she spent seven years in this position.

    This is Mr. Doran’s first year at St. Mary Academy. Mr. Doran is a lifelong resident of Louisville and is married to the former Mary Sue Mattei. They have three children and six grandchildren. Mr. Doran holds a B.A. degree from Bellarmine with a degree in Education and History. Also holds a Masters Degree in Education, Certification in Administration K-12, Endorsement for Supervision of Instruction K-12, and Rank 1, from Spalding University. Mr. Doran has been an elementary school principal for the last thirty four years….and is delighted to be part of the St. Mary Academy staff!! Loves spending time with family and traveling, although Covid has put a damper on traveling. Love to follow high school and college sports!

    Bio
    Kristi Kelly has been a part of Saint Mary Academy since 2009 and a Counselor in the Archdiocese since 1998. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Expressive Arts from the University of Louisville. Helping students be happy, healthy, and kind is her passion. Mrs. Kelly offers guidance to any student, class, family, or staff member in need. Mrs. Kelly is also the coordinator of the House, Speak Up Be Safe, Conscious Discipline, and PeaceBuilders programs at SMA.

    Mrs. Kelly enjoys spending time with her family, taking pictures, creating art, enjoying nature, sitting by the lake, going on adventures, and laughing with friends.

    Fun Fact: Mrs. Kelly took ballet for 25 years and still loves to dance!

    Mr. Sledge is extremely excited for his first year at Saint Mary Academy as the new Director of Technology. He grew up right here in Louisville and attended the University of Louisville with a Bachelors of Science in Communications.
    Mr. Sledge has worked in Public Relations and Advertising before entering the tech world 5 years ago after joining a local Google Partner Tech Startup - RCN Technologies as Lead Project Manager.

    He began his career in the Archdiocese at Saint Aloysius Catholic School as the Computer Teacher and IT Coordinator.

    He is a certified Google Administrator, Educator and Apple Teacher.

    Mr. Sledge is a faithful Catholic and is so happy to bring his expertise to the school to help foster the Catholic faith and education to Louisville's youth.

    Fun Facts - He is getting married to his lovely fiancee' Abigail this October, and loves fitness / sports.

    Bio
    Mrs. Graves is excited to start her third year at Saint Mary Academy! She grew up in Bedford, Kentucky and attended Trimble County High School. Mrs. Graves earned her BS in Mathematics at Bellarmine University where she also competed as a Cross Country and Track & Field athlete. Mrs. Graves earned her MAT from the University of Indianapolis and has spent eight years in education, with roles as a mathematics teacher, coach, and curriculum coordinator. Her passions as an educator include STEM education, technology integration, and student advocacy.

    Mrs. Graves loves running and continues to compete with her college teammates in relay races. She enjoys traveling and hiking with her family, friends, and husband. Mrs. Graves also enjoys writing letters, trying new recipes, and gardening.

    Fun Fact: A bucket list item for Mrs. Graves is to visit all 50 states. She has visited 47 so far and still needs to visit North Dakota, New Mexico, and Arizona.

    Bio
    Elizabeth Auffrey joined the St Bernadette staff in October 2016 as the Director of Children’s Faith Formation. Before joining our staff she worked as the Director of Faith Formation at St. Raphael the Archangel parish, Louisville, KY for 5 years.

    Elizabeth was born in Fort Wayne, IN, attended Barat College in Lake Forest, IL and moved to Carmel, IN as a Student Loan Client Liaison. She has been married for 28 years to Deacon Todd Auffrey who joined the staff in August 2016. They have 3 children and a Golden Doodle.

    She likes pina colada, getting caught in the rain. She’s not much into champagne.

    Angela Kerr started as Bookkeeper at Saint Mary Academy in July 2017. Angela is from Scotland originally, and moved to Louisville with her family in 2006. She is married with 3 boys, all of whom have attended SMA.

    Angela has a degree in Accountancy from Glasgow Caledonian University and worked as an accountant in Scotland for 15 years before moving to America. In her spare time Angela likes to read and work in her garden.

    Mrs. McConnell started at Immaculate Conception and moved when the school merged together with Mother of Good Council to form Saint Mary Academy. She has been with the school for 25 years total. Mrs. McConnell is a graduate of Mercy Academy and the University of Louisville where she completed her training as an Expanded Duty Dental Assistant at the School of Dentistry.



    Mrs. McConnell is married to her husband Bob and they have three children. Tiffany, son in law Joey, Chris, Matt and two beautiful granddaughters! In her spare time, she enjoys working out, being outdoors, swimming, walking her dog and spending time with her family.



    Fun Fact: Although it’s been a few years now, she used to participate in The Louisville Triple Crown of Running for several years. She had such fun and what a great accomplishment crossing the finish line at the Mini Marathon!

    Bio
    Mrs. Susan Naber is the Admissions Coordinator at Saint Mary Academy.
    She is married to Mark and they have 3 children; 2 sons and a daughter, who is currently a student at SMA!
    Susan enjoys spending time outdoors; whether doing yard work, walking, or at the lake. She loves spending time with her family and especially loves when the whole family is together!
    She is a University of Alabama (ROLL TIDE!) football fan and looks forward to football season every year.

    Angela Perry has been Cafeteria Manager for the Archdiocese of Louisville since 1991, currently she is managing at Saint Mary Academy, a school that in her opinion; possesses the Archdiocese of Louisville’s greatest student body and staff.

    Angela attended Central High School in Louisville Kentucky. She is a member of the National School Nutrition Association; she attends yearly conferences with SNA to grow as a professional and to improve her school lunch program. Angela has been a member of the Kentucky School Nutrition Association since 1998.

    Angela enjoys spending time with her husband and family; they have one daughter and one son and two grandchildren. Angela loves to cook for her family and church functions, she loves reading, music, and walking, she loves to take weekend road trips with her husband.

    Bio
    Sharon received a Masters of Theological Studies from Saint Meinrad School of Theology in 2011 and the degree of Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO in May, 2016. Her passion for the Catholic faith, Sacred Scripture and proclaiming and preaching encouraged her pursuit of these degrees.

    Sharon’s ministry experiences include Parish Formation and Pastoral Associate responsibilities in several parishes in the Archdiocese of Louisville, Coordinator of Evangelization 2007-2010, Coordinator of Pro-Life Ministries 2010-2013 and is currently the Pastoral Associate for Intentional Discipleship at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Prospect, KY.

    Mrs. Tegge was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from Assumption High School in 1989 and graduated from the University of Louisville in 1993 with an accounting degree. Mrs. Tegge has been married to her husband, Daron for 21 years. They have 3 children. Austin and Cameron attend Saint Xavier High School. Madison is a 2nd grader at SMA. She loves to watch her kids play sports, hanging out with family and friends and traveling.

    Teresa Butler has been at Saint Mary Academy for 17 years. She grew up in Louisville KY and graduated from Presentation Academy. She received her Bachelors Degree in English and History from Eastern Kentucky University. She enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and 2 dogs. Her favorite thing to do is read.

    Joanne Deam has been part of Saint Mary Academy since 2012. She is from Ohio and moved to Louisville in 1994. She graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Before coming to Saint Mary Academy, she taught third grade, fifth grade and Pre K. Currently she teaches the Preschool 3’s.

    In her free time she enjoys reading, cooking, walking and spending time with her three children and family.

    Mary Watkins has a BA from The University of Iowa and has been with SMA’s preschool for 14 years, previously working at Mother of Good Counsel before the school merger.

    Mary and her husband Jeff live in a divided household. They have two college students, a daughter at UK and a son at U of L. They live with a crazy Pomeranian-mix dog and a fat cat. Mary likes music, reading, and antiquing/flea marketing.

    Trish Feltner has been with Saint Mary Academy since August 2007. She grew up in Louisville, Ky. and went to college at Transylvania University, earning a B. A. in Business Administration with a minor in Art. She also attended Jefferson Community College where she earned a Commercial Art Degree. Trish worked at Power Creative Advertising Agency for 12 years before going back to school to become a teacher. She earned her MAT at Bellarmine University.

    Trish enjoys spending time with her 2 boys, Matthew and Jacob, and her husband Larry. She loves watching her sons play golf and basketball and she is a huge Wildcat fan (GO CATS!) Trish also loves playing with the furry members of her family: Dutch, a chocolate lab, and Oreo, a blue heeler mix puppy. Her other hobbies include swimming, drawing, painting and writing.

    Fun Fact: Trish loves to teach reading and is working on writing children's books.

    This is Mrs. Hilgeford’s first year of teaching at Saint Mary Academy. She taught at another Catholic elementary school for eight years prior to teaching at Saint Mary Academy.
    She was born and raised in Louisville, KY, attended catholic schools since preschool, and truly believes in the gift of receiving a Catholic education. Always being interested in becoming a teacher, she received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Xavier University in May 2011. She received her Master’s in Leadership and Reading Endorsement from Spalding University in May 2017.
    Mrs. Stephanie Hilgeford and her family are active members at St. Raphael the Archangel. She enjoys spending time with her family on their family farm, where they ride horses, garden, and search for fossils.

    Eva Wieck has been at Saint Mary Academy since Fall of 2012 as an Instructional Assistant in 3rd grade. Eva was born in Gothenburg, Sweden 🇸🇪, and has lived in Kentucky since 1999. She taught K-5th grade in Sweden for 3.5 years, and has a teaching degree from the University of Gothenburg. Eva is currently enrolled in the Master program at IUsouthest.

    Eva loves to travel with her family, and at home you can find her snuggled up with a good book.

    Tara Brentzel has been teaching 1st grade at Saint Mary Academy since 2009. She grew up in Louisville and attended Mother of Good Counsel and Assumption High School. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education. Tara has been teaching in the Archdiocese since 2003. She loves helping children grow in both knowledge and spirit at SMA.
    Tara and her husband have two children. They are members of Saint Bernadette Church. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, watching her kids play sports, reading, shopping, and exercising.

    Fun Fact: Tara lived in Anchorage, Alaska for several years as a child.

    Ashley Scroggy has been a part of Saint Mary Academy since 2015. She was born and grew up here in Louisville, Kentucky. She has her Masters degree in Elementary Education from Bellarmine University and a BA in Liberal Studies. Prior to teaching, she coached competitive gymnastics for 12 years and occasionally still subs. Ashley and her husband have one little one and another one on the way. She loves traveling, water-skiing, cheering on the Wildcats, and spending time with family.

    Ms. Nett grew up in the Louisville Area and attended John Paul II Academy and Brown School. She got her BA in Elementary Education and Learning and Behavior Disorders from Bellarmine University. In her free time, Ms. Nett enjoys playing tennis, reading books, and taking too many trips to Chick-fil-A.

    This is Mrs. Schumann’s first year at Saint Mary Academy. She has previously taught at a school in IN for the last 7 years. She grew up in New Albany, IN but has lived in Louisville for the past 7 years. Mrs. Schumann has her undergraduate degree from Ball State University. She has her teaching degree and Master’s from Indiana University Southeast.



    Mrs. Schumann enjoys spending time with her family at home, at her parents place at Rough River, and their condo in Panama City, FL. She has 3 young children and 1 dog. Mrs. Schumann and her husband are huge UofL fans and love any type of sporting events that they have time to attend.


    Fun Fact: Mrs. Schumann was a massage therapist for 8 years before starting her career in teaching.

    Penny Hourigan is in her eleventh year at Saint Mary Academy. She is a native of Louisville and a graduate from Mercy Academy. Penny also received her Bachelors degree from the University of Louisville.

    Penny loves spending time with her family including her two daughters, one in 8th grade at SMA and the other at Assumption High School. She also enjoys being outside and quality time with her many pets that include dogs, cats, guinea pigs, ducks and a bunny. Her hobbies include artwork, crafting and gardening.

    One thing that you may not know about Penny is that she spent close to twenty years as a tennis professional, teaching in Louisville and Denver, Colorado.

    Ms. Deye grew up in Louisville and attended St. Albert the Great and Sacred Heart Academy. She went to the University of Kentucky and graduated with a BA in Exceptional Children Learning and Behavior Disorders. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Education in Teacher Leadership from the University of Cumberlands.

    Ms. Deye enjoys spending time with her family, friends and dog, Zoey. She is a huge Kentucky fan and attends many of their football games in the fall. Ms. Deye enjoys trips to the lake with her family and being outside with her dog. She also coaches a high school girls lacrosse team.

    Kelli Eckstein has been a part of Saint Mary Academy since 2013. She grew up in Jasper, Indiana. Kelli earned her BS in Elementary Education at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Kelli also holds a MA in Education with an emphasis in Literacy from the University of the Cumberlands. Kelli teaches third grade for Saint Mary Academy.

    Kelli enjoys spending time with her son, Leo, husband and extended family. She also enjoys hiking and camping, traveling, reading, watching sports and playing games.

    Fun Fact: Kelli’s husband is also a teacher! She has also traveled to 48 of the 50 states!

    This is Ms. Hoehler's second year at Saint Mary Academy. She has lived in Louisville, Kentucky her whole life. She attended Holy Spirit School and Assumption High School. Ms. Hoehler graduated with her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Louisville. Last year, she completed her Master's in Education with a concentration in School Counseling from the University of Louisville's School of Education.

    In her spare time, Ms. Hoehler likes to play sand volleyball with friends, craft, and spend time with her family and two dogs.

    Mrs. Bottomley was born and raised here in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended the University of Louisville for her undergraduate degree and is currently pursing a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Bellarmine University. Mrs. Bottomley enjoys going to the lake with her family, cheering on her Cards, and spending time with her husband and her puppy.

    Ms. Crow has been working at Saint Mary Academy for six years. Ms. Crow grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and is a graduate of Saint Margaret Mary and Sacred Heart Academy. Ms. Crow earned her BS in Elementary Education from the University of Louisville and her Masters in Teaching from Bellarmine University.



    Ms. Crow enjoys spending time with her family and her dog. Ms. Crow is a big University of Louisville fan and loves attending any UL game. She also loves spending time outside or reading a good book.

    This is Mrs. Koestel’s first year of teaching at SMA. She was born, and has spent most of her life in Louisville, KY, but has also lived in Philadelphia, PA , Linlithgow, Scotland and spent a summer living in Istanbul, Turkey. She is a graduate of St. Matthias and Angela Merici High School. Mrs. Koestel earned her B.A. in English and Secondary Education at the University of Louisville, her M.S. in Education from IUS, and Rank I certification in administration from Spalding University. Mrs. Koestel taught 20+ years at St. Albert the Great.

    Mrs. Koestel has been married to Glenn for 36 years. They have one son, Eric, who is working toward his MAT in special education, and a daughter Zoe, who was recently married, is a veterinarian and working toward a Ph.D in epidemiology. Mrs. Koestel has two Newfoundland dogs, Zeus and Baloo. She loves spending time with her family, her dogs, reading, hiking, and traveling.

    Bio
    Mrs. Bullard has lived in Crestwood with her husband for 21 years. She has three boys; the youngest just turned 21. She also has a 6 mo. old grandaughter! In addition to a Master of Arts in Teaching from Bellarmine University, Mrs. Bullard has earned a B.S. in Family Studies from the University of Kentucky and a M.A. in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Before joining the SMA family, Mrs. Bullard taught at Clear Creek Elementary in Shelby County.

    In addition to spending time with her family, Mrs. Bullard enjoys reading, cooking, exercising, and watching sports with her husband. She loves traveling to places that give her opportunities to spend time outdoors and go hiking. Fun fact: She prefers mountains over beaches (unless it’s a beach in Hawaii!)

    Bio
    Ms. Von Busch is a Saint Mary Academy alum! After graduating SMA in 2011, Ms. Von Busch graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and finished her Bachelors in Elementary Education at the University of Louisville. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Theology through Franciscan University. This is her second year at Saint Mary Academy.

    Ms. Von Busch has been the High School Youth Ministry Coordinator at Saint Bernadette for 5 years. She enjoys encouraging our teens to be in an intimate relationship with Jesus and becoming fully alive in The Catholic Faith! She also enjoys a good coffee, exercising, playing with her dog, and playing volleyball.

    Fun Fact: Ms. Von Busch can play 2 instruments and loves to sing!
  • Middle School History Teacher

    Bio
    This is Mr. Bader’s third year at Saint Mary Academy. He was born and raised in New York and has lived in Louisville for the past 6 years. Mr. Bader earned a BS in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Teaching from Bellarmine University.

    Mr. Bader enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He loves watching and playing sports and is a huge Louisville fan. Mr Bader also coaches high school basketball and track and field.

    This is Ms. Laslie's first year at SMA! Ms. Laslie grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and is a graduate of John Paul II Academy and Assumption High School. Ms. Laslie earned her BA in English and BS in Secondary Education from Bellarmine University.

    Ms. Laslie enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Ms. Laslie also enjoys staying in with a good book.

    Fun Fact: Ms. Laslie is getting married in October 2021. Her new name will be Mrs. Rand!
  • Middle School Math Teacher

    Bio
    This is Mr. Rodriguez’s first year at Saint Mary Academy. Mr. Rodriguez is originally from the northern Mid-West but has lived in Louisville for 20 years. Mr. Rodriguez graduated from Saint Agnes Catholic School and Saint Xavier High School. Mr. Rodriguez earned his BBA in Accounting and Entrepreneurship from the University of Cincinnati. He also earned his MSACC from the University of Kentucky and is currently pursuing his MAT at Spalding University.



    Mr. Rodriguez enjoys spending time with his family and his golden retriever puppy. Mr. Rodriguez is an avid hockey fan and very much enjoys attending various productions at the Kentucky Art Center. He also enjoys listening to music and studying art across different periods of history

    Fun fact: Mr. Rodriguez worked/lived in Singapore for a short period of time.

    Bio
    Jon Wiseman has been a part of Saint Mary Academy since 2014. He grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and attended Henry Clay High School. Jon earned his Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown College and has complete post-baccalaureate work in Science Education from The University of Louisville. Jon also has earned his Masters of Art in Education from Georgetown College and completed his student teaching in Oldham County at SOMS. He work for several years in Oldham County as a substitute teacher before coming to teach at Saint Mary Academy.

    Jon has lived in the Louisville area since 1999 with his Wife (Cassie) and son (Andrew). Jon enjoys U of L sports and travels to Cincinnati to watch the Reds (baseball) and Bengals (football) whenever possible. He also loves to spend time on the family farm: hunting, gardening, hobby farming and, exploring for fossils.


    Fun Fact: Jon has a extensive pepper garden and hop field that he works with his brother on the family farm in Scott County Kentucky.

    Mrs. Ruley has been working at Saint Mary Academy for four years. As a native of Louisville, KY, she is a graduate of Mother of Good Counsel and Sacred Heart Academy. Mrs. Ruley earned her BS in Education from Western Kentucky University and her M.Ed. with an emphasis in Educational Technology from Indiana University Southeast. Outside of school, Mrs. Ruley enjoys fostering new and spontaneous adventures with her family, creating delicious foods in the kitchen, or retreating to the quiet of nature at the lake.

    Fun Fact: Mrs. Ruley lived and taught in California.

    Bio
    Ms. Kelsey Joy has been a teacher for 6 years. She has experience teaching 5th and 2nd grade. Currently, Ms. Joy has taken on a new role as the Technology Coordinator at Saint Mary Academy. She is so excited to guide students to be outstanding digital citizens and help them create innovative projects using new digital tools! Ms. Joy grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and is graduate of St. Margaret Mary and Assumption High School. She
    holds a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Bellarmine University and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky.

    Ms. Joy enjoys spending time with her family at Barren River Lake and cuddling with her two fur babies, Beau and Bella. She loves to travel to new places and try unique dishes!

    Fun Fact: Ms. Joy spent a summer studying health and fitness in Spain while she was the University of Kentucky!

    This is Ms. Wheeler's first year at Saint Mary Academy. Ms. Wheeler was born and raised in Eastern KY (Morehead). She is a 2013 graduate of Rowan County Senior High School. Ms. Wheeler attended Morehead State University for undergraduate and graduate school. In 2018, she earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree and in 2020, her Masters in Vocal Performance.

    Ms. Wheeler enjoys singing opera, eating delicious food, and watching cooking shows or dramatic shows. She has one rotten cat named Ravel. He weighs about 15 pounds! In February 2022, Ms. Wheeler will change her name to Mrs. Bruce. So not only will she be busy with lesson plans, but also wedding planning! Mr. Bruce helps Ms. Wheeler with the weekly school mass music.

    Fun Fact(s): Ms. Wheeler is 25 years older than her youngest sibling, Kingston. She is also the oldest sibling and has 7 younger siblings. (Treasure, Elissa, Sarah, Adrianna, AJ, Armani, and Kingston).
