About Saint Mary Academy

Saint Mary Academy’s History and Catholic History

school history image

Saint Mary Academy was originally formed in 2007 as a regional covenant school shared by Immaculate Conception and Mother of Good Counsel. It is located in the Norton Commons community and borders the Jefferson and Oldham County lines. The name of the school, Saint Mary Academy, was chosen because it honors Mary, who is both the Immaculate Conception and the Mother of Good Counsel. For the first two years of the school’s existence, students continued to attend classes on two different campuses. The 2007-2008 school year marked the inaugural year of Saint Mary Academy where classes started on August 15th. Saint Mary Academy serves Preschool through Eighth Grade students and is the first regional school in the Archdioceses of Louisville built from the ground up.

On June 20, 2007 Archbishop Kelly clustered the parishes of Transfiguration of Our Lord and Mother of Good Counsel. The merger created a new parish to follow in 2008.

On April 8, 2008, at the bicentennial celebration of the founding of our Diocese, four new parishes were formed: Blessed Theresa of Calcutta; Saint Bernadette; St. Peter the Apostle; and Good Shepherd. The name of our new church, Saint Bernadette, was chosen on the 75th anniversary of the Canonization of Bernadette as a saint and the 150th anniversary of the first apparition.

Several acres of land were donated and on April 28, 2008, Archbishop Kurtz officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of the St. Bernadette Parish Center and Saint Mary Academy. On August 19, 2009, classes began in the new Saint Mary Academy building and on August 31, 2009, the parish staff moved into the completed parish center.

At the end of the 2014 - 2015 school year, SMA became the parish school of Saint Bernadette and we continue to grow together in the spirit of Christ.
